Katy kneels beneath a giant staghorn fern hanging from a tree branch.

Hello! My name is Katy, and I’m the one woman show behind the boutique plant care company, Plant Practice. I live in what I like to call SouthSouth Austin with my husband and teenage son, two cats, 11 chickens, a bunch of fish, and 150+ plants.

I grew up on wooded acreage in rural Kentucky, climbing trees, collecting cicada shells, and playing in the forest until dinnertime. I rode a horse before I could walk (RIP Lickey), and learned early how to bait my own hook. I ate tomatoes straight off the vine and marveled at my Mammy’s flower gardens. I had no idea that the mushrooms we picked by the bag full each Spring cost $100/lb in the fancy grocery stores of my adulthood here in Austin – I just loved the wonder of tramping through new parts of the damp woods in search of buttery magic.

Life has taken me down various paths since those idyllic childhood days, but the love of the natural world has never left me. Whether it was a balcony pot of hibiscus or keeping flower stems in a caterpillar habitat when my son was young – oh the joy of watching a toddler watch a caterpillar form its chrysalis! – plants have always been a source of wonder and excitement.

Central Texas can be a tricky place to grow plants. The heat, ongoing drought broken by sometimes catastrophic storms, ice events…and “full sun” often doesn’t mean full TEXAS sun! Believe it or not, these factors can affect not only your outdoor patio plants, but indoor houseplants, too.

Over more than two decades, I’ve killed more plants than I can count – so you don’t have to! Let’s work together, and I can help you skip the mistakes I made. I’ve gone through the full Travis County Master Gardener course, and have attended numerous workshops and classes as a member of the Native Plant Society of Texas – I’ve learned a lot and I’m still learning!

Whether you want to create an indoor jungle full of luscious tropicals, try your hand at a grow cabinet (mini indoor greenhouse), or liven up your patio with beautiful seasonal color, we can make it happen. I’m here to give you the knowledge and confidence to jumpstart your own project, or take full charge with start to finish design and ongoing maintenance. Let’s practice plants!
